Joann Lõssov (born September 10, 1921 – died August 3, 2000) was a famous basketball player and coach. He was from Estonia, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time. Joann was also known by his Russian name, Ioann Fyodorovich Lysov.

Lõssov played for the Soviet Union national basketball team from 1947 to 1952. He was the team captain and a Point guard from 1949. He was even named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the 1947 EuroBasket tournament.

After he stopped playing, Joann became a successful coach. He led the Soviet Union women’s team from 1953 to 1958. Under his coaching, they won gold medals at the European Championships in 1954 and 1956. In 2010, he was honored by being chosen for the Hall of Fame of Estonian basketball.

Playing for Clubs

Joann Lõssov started his basketball journey in 1936. Before World War II, he played for teams like YMCA and Russ. After the war, he joined Tallinna Kalev.

He also played for the University of Tartu team. With them, he won a gold medal in 1949 and a silver medal in 1950 in the Soviet Union League Championship. He also helped Tallinna Kalev win the Estonian SSR Championship several times.

Playing for the National Team

Lõssov was a key player for the Soviet Union men's national basketball team. He played in the 1952 Summer Olympics held in Helsinki. His team won a silver medal there, which was a huge achievement! He played in all eight games for the Soviet Union during those Olympics.
