Joanna Hogg's Career in Film
Starting Out in TV
After finishing school in the late 1970s, Joanna Hogg started her career as a photographer. She began making experimental short films using a special camera. She even borrowed a camera from a famous filmmaker named Derek Jarman, who became an early helper for her.
One of her short films helped her get into the National Film and Television School. This is a special school where people learn how to direct movies. In 1986, her graduation film, Caprice, starred the well-known actress Tilda Swinton. After school, Joanna directed music videos for singers like Alison Moyet. She also worked on TV shows for Channel Four. In the 1990s, she directed episodes for popular British TV series such as London Bridge, Casualty, and London's Burning. She also directed a special episode of EastEnders called EastEnders: Dot's Story in 2003.
Making Feature Films
Joanna Hogg wanted to make movies that were different from TV shows. She filmed her first feature movie, Unrelated (2007), in Tuscany, Italy. The story is about a woman named Anna who goes on holiday with her friend's family. Anna starts spending more time with the teenagers, which creates some interesting situations. This film was highly praised by critics. It won awards like the FIPRESCI International Critics Award and the Guardian First Film Award.
Her second film, Archipelago, was filmed on the beautiful island of Tresco. It was shown at the 2010 London Film Festival. Her third film, Exhibition, starred musician Viv Albertine and artist Liam Gillick. Tom Hiddleston, who has worked with Hogg many times, also appeared in this film. Critics loved Exhibition, with one calling it a "masterful cinematic enigma."
A famous director named Martin Scorsese saw Joanna's film Archipelago and was very impressed. He contacted her and became an executive producer for her next film, The Souvenir (2019). This movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It tells a story inspired by Hogg's own life, starring Honor Swinton Byrne, Tom Burke, and Tilda Swinton. The Souvenir was nominated for many awards at film festivals around the world.
The story continued with a sequel, The Souvenir Part II, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021. This film also received great reviews and earned more award nominations.
Joanna Hogg's most recent film is The Eternal Daughter. This is a mystery-drama movie that again stars Tilda Swinton. It was first shown at the 2022 Venice Film Festival.
Curating Art Exhibitions
In 2015, Joanna Hogg helped organize an art exhibition for another filmmaker named Chantal Akerman. This was part of a bigger project she started in 2011 with Adam Roberts. They created a group called A Nos Amours. This group helps show movies that people might have missed or that are very important. Joanna believes it's important for new generations to see the work of great directors like Tarkovsky.
Joanna Hogg's Unique Style
Joanna Hogg's filmmaking style is inspired by directors from Europe and Asia, like Eric Rohmer and Yasujirō Ozu. She often uses long takes and keeps the camera still. This helps viewers feel like they are really there.
She also does something special: she casts a mix of professional actors and people who are not actors in her films. For example, she cast a landscape painter named Christopher Baker in Archipelago. Her movies often show the lives of middle-class characters in Britain. Many people see her work as a new way of showing real life in British films.
