Joanna Wang (Chinese: 王若琳; pinyin: Wáng Ruòlín) was born on August 1, 1988. She is a talented Taiwanese-American singer and songwriter. Her father, Bing Wang, is also a well-known music producer.
Joanna was born in Taipei, Taiwan. But she grew up in Los Angeles, California, in the United States. She started her music journey early. When she was 16, she decided to leave high school to focus on her music.
In January 2008, Joanna released her very first album, Start from Here. It was special because it had two discs: one with songs in English and another with songs in Chinese. This album quickly became a huge hit! It reached number one in Taiwan and was very popular across Asia. Later that year, in June 2008, it was also released in Japan. Her second album, Joanna & Wang Ruo-lin, came out in January 2009. This album included her own original songs, like those from The Adult Storybook.

Joanna's Musical Journey
Growing up in the United States, Joanna listened to many different kinds of music. She loved famous bands like The Beatles and Queen. She also enjoyed music from Oingo Boingo.
Some of her biggest inspirations come from interesting places. She loves the music of Danny Elfman and Paul McCartney. Joanna is also a big fan of video game music! She especially likes the music from popular games like Castlevania, Zelda, and Mario.
Joanna is a left-handed guitarist. This means she plays the guitar with her left hand. She has performed many of her own songs. She has also sung cover versions of popular English and Chinese songs on Taiwanese TV shows.
Since 2013, Joanna has sometimes performed with a band. They call themselves Alferd Packer & The Weird Uncles. In March 2016, Joanna acted in a musical play. It was called Turn Left, Turn Right. This musical was based on a famous illustrated book.
You might have heard Joanna's music in commercials too! Her version of "Pure Imagination" was used in an advertisement. This song was from her album Midnight Cinema. It was featured in a commercial for the Samsung Galaxy Fold phone in February 2019.
Joanna continues to create new music. She released her twelfth album, Hotel La Rut, in 2024. This album was inspired by a funny sketch from a TV show called Kids In The Hall.
