Joaquín Xaudaró y Echau (born August 17, 1872 – died April 1, 1933) was a talented Spanish artist. He was known for his cartoons, illustrations, and caricatures. A caricaturist draws funny pictures of people or things, often making certain features bigger. Xaudaró's art helped connect the older style of 1800s drawings with the cartoons we know today.

He often drew about new inventions and daily life. His gentle humor and sharp observations made his work special. For example, he drew about early airplanes and wireless telegraphs.

Early Life and Beginnings

Joaquín Xaudaró was born in Vigan, a city in the Philippines. At that time, the Philippines was part of Spain. In 1883, when he was about 11 years old, his family moved to Barcelona, Spain.

Xaudaró later studied art in Paris, France, and London, England. He started his career by drawing for humor magazines. Some of these were Madrid Cómico and Barcelona Cómica. Sometimes, he used the pen name J. O'Raduax, which is his last name spelled backward! From 1907 to 1914, he also drew for a famous magazine in Paris called Le Rire.

His Famous Drawings

Later, Xaudaró worked for two big newspapers in Madrid: Blanco y Negro and ABC. His daily cartoons for ABC made him very famous. Each of these cartoons had a small, special dog in them. This little dog became his trademark and was known as "el perrito de Xaudaró" (Xaudaró's little dog).

He also illustrated many books. One famous project was for Juan Pérez Zúñiga's book, Los viajes morrocotudos (which means "The Fantastic Voyages"). Xaudaró also published collections of his own cartoons. These included Los Sports, which was about sports, and Xaudaró: Tomos de Chistes, a collection of his earlier works.

Beyond Cartoons

Joaquín Xaudaró also worked in theater. He designed the scenery for a play called Madame Butterfly.

Near the end of his life, in 1932, he helped start a company called Sociedad Española de Dibujos Animados (SEDA). This company focused on animated drawings, like cartoons. He even worked on an animated film with another artist named K-Hito. Joaquín Xaudaró passed away in Madrid.
