Joaquín Yarza Luaces (born in Ferrol, Spain on August 16, 1936 – died in Barcelona on March 6, 2016) was a famous Spanish art historian. He started his career in Madrid and later became a teacher in Barcelona in 1974. He was a very important guide for studying medieval art, especially during the Renaissance period.

His Life Story

Joaquín Yarza Luaces came from a family with a long history in the naval world. His grandfather, José Joaquín Yarza Albea, was a well-known naval expert in Spain. Because of this family tradition, Joaquín was expected to become a naval engineer.

He even started studying at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. But during his first year, he realized his real passion wasn't ships. It was art history! He bravely told his family he wanted to follow his heart.

Becoming an Art Historian

Joaquín studied art history at the Complutense University of Madrid from 1961 to 1965. After finishing his studies, he wrote a special research paper (called a doctorate thesis) about old miniature paintings from the 11th and 12th centuries in Spain.

He then started teaching at the Complutense University of Madrid (1965-1969) and the Autonomous University of Madrid (1968-1974). From 1974 to 1981, he taught art history at the University of Barcelona. Later, he became a professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

His Research and Writings

Joaquín Yarza spent most of his time researching and writing about medieval art from Spain and Byzantine art. Even though he mostly focused on the medieval period, he also explored Renaissance painting. He studied artists like Navarrete el Mudo, Alonso de Herrera, and the sculptor Pedro Berruguete.

He wrote many important books, including "Art and Architecture in Spain, 500-1250" (1987) and "The Middle Ages" (1988). He also helped create books about art history for high school students. He shared his knowledge in popular books like "Gothic Painting" (1987) and "Gothic Art" (1991).

Working with Museums and Magazines

Joaquín Yarza helped create the catalog for the medieval collection at the Museu Frederic Marès in Barcelona. He also led the magazine Locus Amoenus from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, starting in 1995. He was also part of other art history magazines.

He was a member of the Spanish Committee of History of Art from 1982 to 1988. He also joined important boards in Catalonia that dealt with museums and protecting cultural treasures.
