The Joaquin Rocks are a special group of three tall rock formations. They are found on Joaquin Ridge in Fresno County, California. These rocks were first known as "Las Tres Piedras," which means "The Three Rocks." They stand very high, at about 4,121 feet (1,256 meters) above sea level.

The Joaquin Rocks are the most noticeable feature of Joaquin Ridge. You can see these three rock pillars from many miles away in the San Joaquin Valley. From the top of the rocks, you can see a huge part of the valley. They are located about 3 miles (4.8 km) west-northwest of Black Mountain and 3 miles (4.8 km) southwest of Ragged Valley.

The Story Behind the Name

The Joaquin Rocks got their name from a person named Joaquin Murietta. He lived a long time ago, from 1830 to 1853. During the California Gold Rush, he was known as a "49'er" from Sonora.

Murietta and his group used this area as a secret base. They also used it as a safe place for their activities, which included taking horses and other goods. The rocks themselves were very useful. They served as a lookout point, giving a clear view of anyone approaching their hideout in the Arroyo de Cantua.
