Jocotán is a town and a municipality in Guatemala. It is located in the Chiquimula department. A municipality is like a local government area.
In Jocotán, you can find Radio Chortis. This is a Roman Catholic radio station. It gets money from Catholic groups in Belgium and Germany. The station mostly broadcasts in Spanish. However, for a few hours each week, it broadcasts in the Ch'orti' language. This language is still spoken in some quiet, isolated areas nearby.

History of Jocotán
Understanding the 2001 Food Shortage
Lua error in Module:Location_map at line 420: attempt to index field 'wikibase' (a nil value). On August 3, 2001, the Jocotán municipality announced a "yellow code" alert. This happened because people in rural communities were facing a serious food shortage. The main reasons for this problem were a very short rainy season and a drop in coffee prices around the world.
The government at the time declared a "State of Calamity." This allowed them to ask for help from other countries. Officially, 48 people were reported to have died.
Climate in Jocotán
Jocotán has a tropical savanna climate. This type of climate is known as Aw in the Köppen climate classification system. It means the area is usually warm all year. It also has a wet season and a dry season.

Where is Jocotán Located?
Jocotán is surrounded by other municipalities from the Chiquimula Department. The only exception is to the North, where it shares a border with Zacapa.
