Zacapa (Spanish pronunciation: [saˈkapa]) is a city and a municipality in Guatemala. It is the capital city of the Zacapa Department. This city is located about 112 kilometers (70 miles) from Guatemala City, which is the country's capital. Zacapa is known for its warm climate and friendly people.

What's in the Name?
The name Zacapa has an interesting history. A historian and poet named Francisco Antonio De Fuentes Y Guzmán wrote about it. He said the name comes from the Nahuatl language.
The word Zacatl means "grass" or "weed." The word apan means "in the river." So, when you put them together, Zacapa means "on the river of grass."
Sports in Zacapa
Zacapa has its own football (soccer) team called Deportivo Zacapa. They play in Guatemala's top football league. Their home games are played at the Estadio David Ordoñez Bardales. The team's mascot is a Gallo, which means "rooster" in Spanish.
