Joe went to college at Richmond upon Thames College. He also studied acting at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Both of his parents work in the movie business. Besides acting, Joe is good at photography, playing the guitar, and gymnastics.

Joe Anderson has worked in movies, on television, and on the stage. He performed at the Chichester Festival Theatre.

He played a role in the movie Copying Beethoven. In this film, he acted as Ludwig van Beethoven's nephew. Joe also appeared in Across the Universe. He played Max, a young American who was called to fight in the Vietnam War.

In 2007, Joe starred in the movie Control. He played Peter Hook, the bass player for the band Joy Division. Anton Corbijn directed this film.
