Joseph Bonson (born June 19, 1936 – died November 29, 1991) was an English professional footballer. He played as a forward for many different clubs in the 1950s and 1960s.
Football Career
Starting at Wolves
Joe Bonson began his football journey at Wolverhampton Wanderers. He worked his way up through their youth teams. In 1954, he played in the FA Youth Cup Final. His team lost to Manchester United.
Joe then joined the first team. His first game was on January 1, 1957. Wolves won 3–2 against Sunderland. He played 11 games in a row and scored 6 goals. However, Wolves had many great strikers. So, Joe was sold to Cardiff City for £7,000. This happened at the end of the season.
Time at Cardiff City
Joe joined Cardiff City to replace Johnny Nicholls. Johnny had moved to Exeter City. Joe scored in his first game for Cardiff in November 1957. It was a 1–1 draw with Ipswich Town. He ended that season with 12 goals in 25 games.
While at Cardiff, Joe played very well with two other forwards. These were Wales international players. First, he played with Ron Hewitt. Later, he teamed up with Derek Tapscott, who joined from Arsenal.
Joe's best year for scoring goals was the 1958–59 season. He scored 18 goals for Cardiff City. After this season, he moved to Scunthorpe United. This was part of a player exchange for Peter Donnelly.
Later Career
After leaving Cardiff, Joe Bonson played for several other clubs. These teams were in the lower football leagues in England. He played for Doncaster Rovers, Newport County, Brentford, and Lincoln City.
Joe Bonson passed away in 1991.
