Ron Hewitt: A Football Star
Ron Hewitt was born in Flint, Flintshire, a town in Wales. He became known for his amazing goal-scoring skills throughout his career.
Early Days and First Clubs
Ron started his football journey at Wolves. However, he found it hard to get a spot in their main team. So, he moved on to play for Walsall and then Darlington. These early experiences helped him grow as a player.
Becoming a Wrexham Legend
In 1951, Ron joined Wrexham, where he truly shined. He played for Wrexham for six years and became a club hero. He was the top goal scorer for Wrexham in three of those seasons! His great performance even earned him a spot on the Third Division North representative team in 1956/57. This was a special team made up of the best players from that league.
Moving to Cardiff and Other Teams
Ron's fantastic skills at Wrexham caught the eye of another Welsh team, Cardiff City. In 1957, they paid £7,000 to sign him, which was a lot of money back then! He continued his goal-scoring streak at Cardiff, being their top scorer in both of his two seasons there. After his time at Cardiff, he returned to Wrexham for another season. He also played for other clubs like Coventry City, Chester City, and Hereford United. Later in his career, he played for teams outside the main professional leagues, known as non-league football.
Playing for Wales
One of the biggest highlights of Ron's career was playing for his country. He made his first appearance for the Wales national team in 1958 against Israel. That same year, he was chosen to be part of the Wales squad for the 1958 FIFA World Cup held in Sweden. This was a huge achievement for any footballer.
Later Life and Family
Ron Hewitt passed away in September 2001 at the age of 73. He left behind a legacy as a talented Welsh footballer. Interestingly, Ron was also the uncle of Andy Holden, who later became a coach for Everton and also played for Chester and Wales.
