In 2022, he was chosen by the Republican and Conservative parties to run for the U.S. Senate in New York. This made him the first African American to get major party support for a U.S. Senate race in New York.

Early Life and Education

Joseph Pinion III was born in Yonkers, New York, on August 11, 1983. He went to Colgate University with a scholarship for sports. There, he played football. He finished college in 2006 with a degree in English.

Career and Activism

Pinion started his career helping young people at a health center in the Bronx. After that, he became a political commentator. He appeared on news channels like CNN. Later, Pinion hosted a show called "Saturday Agenda" on Newsmax.

He is also active in fighting climate change. He has spoken out against people in the Republican Party who do not believe in climate change. Since 2017, he has worked with RepublicEn. This group supports environmental protection from a right-leaning point of view.

Political Journey

Running for State Assembly

In 2018, Pinion decided to run for a seat in the New York State Assembly. This was for the 90th district. He was chosen by both the Republican and Conservative parties. However, he lost that election to Nader Sayegh.

Running for U.S. Senate

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2022, Pinion announced he would run for the United States Senate. He shared a video that honored Martin Luther King Jr.. At the Republican meeting in Nassau County, he was officially chosen as the party's candidate.

Pinion ran against Chuck Schumer, who was the current Senator and the Senate Majority Leader. Schumer is a member of the Democratic Party. Pinion did not win the election. He received about 2.5 million votes across New York, which was 42.8% of the total votes. Schumer received 56.8%.

Pinion spent much less money on his campaign than Schumer did. Even so, Pinion's results were better than any Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in New York since 2000. His performance was part of a trend in the 2022 New York state elections. In these elections, Republicans did better than expected in races across the state.
