Joseph Andrew Ross (born May 21, 1993) is an American professional baseball pitcher. He plays for the Philadelphia Phillies in Major League Baseball (MLB). Joe has also played for the Washington Nationals and Milwaukee Brewers. He was picked by the San Diego Padres in the first round of the 2011 MLB draft. Joe made his big league debut in 2015 with the Nationals.

Joe Ross's Baseball Journey

Starting with the San Diego Padres (2011–2014)

The San Diego Padres chose Joe Ross in the first round of the 2011 MLB draft. He was the 25th player picked overall. Joe was still in high school at Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, California. He had planned to go to college at the University of California, Los Angeles. But he decided to sign with the Padres instead.

Joe started his professional career with the Arizona League Padres. Before the 2012 season, he was seen as one of the top young players in baseball. In 2012, he played for the Fort Wayne TinCaps. This is a Single–A team in the Midwest League. However, he missed most of that season. He had an injury called right shoulder inflammation.

Playing for the Washington Nationals (2015–2021)

On December 19, 2014, Joe Ross was traded to the Washington Nationals. This was part of a big three-team trade. The Padres also sent another player, Trea Turner, to the Nationals.

On June 6, 2015, Joe was called up to the Major Leagues for the first time. He made his first MLB start that very day. Joe pitched very well in his second and third games. He helped the Nationals win both times. In his third game, he struck out 11 batters. This ended an eight-game winning streak for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Joe stayed in the starting group because he was pitching so well. Later in the season, he moved to the bullpen. This was to help him not pitch too many innings.

Joe started the 2016 season as a pitcher for the Nationals. But he missed a lot of the season. He had more right shoulder inflammation. He was put on the injured list on July 3, 2016. He came back to play on September 18. After returning, Joe sometimes struggled to pitch for many innings. He would often pitch the first few innings. Then another pitcher would take over for a longer time. Joe started Game 4 of the 2016 playoffs. He gave up 4 runs in less than three innings.

Joe was a key player for the Nationals in the first half of the 2017 season. He started the year playing for a minor league team. But he was called up to the Nationals after another pitcher struggled. Joe had some tough games early on. He was sent back to the minor leagues in May. He returned to the Nationals' starting team on May 23. He pitched well against the Seattle Mariners.

In 2017, Joe's team scored a lot of runs when he pitched. The Nationals scored more than 10 runs in eight of his 13 starts. However, in his last start on July 9, Joe had to leave the game early. This meant he would miss the rest of 2017 and part of 2018. In 2017, his record was 5 wins and 3 losses. His ERA was 5.01.

After his surgery, Joe tried to pitch in an MLB game again on September 7, 2018. This was 14 months after his surgery. He faced the Chicago Cubs. The game was delayed by rain. Joe pitched for a short time before the game was stopped again. His fastball was very fast, even faster than before his surgery. In 2018, he played in three games. His record was 0 wins and 2 losses. His ERA was 5.06.

In 2019, Joe had 4 wins and 4 losses. His ERA was 5.48. Joe started Game 5 of the 2019 World Series for the Nationals. He pitched because another star pitcher was hurt. Joe gave up 4 runs in 5 innings. The Astros won that game. But the Nationals went on to win the World Series in 7 games. Joe received a World Series ring for being part of the team.

On June 29, 2020, Joe said he would not play in the 2020 season. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
