Joe Ross's Baseball Journey
Starting with the San Diego Padres (2011–2014)
The San Diego Padres picked Joe Ross in the first round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft. He was the 25th player chosen overall. Joe was still in high school at Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, California. He had planned to go to the University of California, Los Angeles for college. However, he decided to sign with the Padres instead.
Joe began his professional career with the Arizona League Padres. Before the 2012 season, he was seen as one of the top young players in baseball. In 2012, he pitched for the Fort Wayne TinCaps. This team is in the Single–A Midwest League. Sadly, he missed most of that season. He had an injury called right shoulder inflammation.
Ross returned to play for Fort Wayne in the 2013 season.
In 2014, Joe started the season with the Lake Elsinore Storm. This team plays in the High–A California League. Later that season, he moved up to the Double-A San Antonio Missions.
Playing for the Washington Nationals (2015–2021)
On December 19, 2014, Joe Ross was traded to the Washington Nationals. This trade also included another player, Trea Turner. It was a big three-team trade.
On June 6, 2015, Joe was called up to the Major Leagues for the first time. He made his MLB debut as a starting pitcher that same day. Joe pitched very well in his next two starts. He earned wins for the Nationals. In his third game, he struck out 11 batters. This helped stop an eight-game winning streak by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In August, his manager, Matt Williams, said Joe would stay in the starting lineup. This was because he was pitching so well. But in September, Joe moved to the bullpen. This was to limit how many innings he pitched that season.
Joe started the 2016 season as a starting pitcher. But he missed a lot of the season. He had more right shoulder inflammation. He was put on the disabled list in July. He came back to play in September. When he returned, he sometimes pitched the first few innings. Then, another pitcher would take over. Joe started Game 4 of the 2016 NLDS. He gave up 4 runs in less than 3 innings.
In the first half of the 2017 season, Joe played both in the Majors and in Triple-A. He started the year in Triple-A. But he was called up to the Nationals early on. He struggled at first and was sent back down. He returned to the Major League team in May.
Joe got a lot of run support from his team in 2017. The Nationals scored more than 10 runs in many of his starts. However, in a game on July 9, Joe left early. His fastball was much slower than usual. On July 15, doctors found a serious injury. He had a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. This meant he needed ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction surgery, also known as "Tommy John" surgery. This surgery kept him out for the rest of 2017 and part of 2018. In 2017, his record was 5 wins and 3 losses.
After his surgery, Joe tried to return on September 7, 2018. He faced the Chicago Cubs. The game was delayed by rain. Joe pitched for only a short time before the game was stopped again. Even so, his fastball was very fast, even faster than before his surgery. In 2018, he played in three games. He had 0 wins and 2 losses.
In 2019, Joe had 4 wins and 4 losses. Joe started Game 5 of the 2019 World Series for the Nationals. He pitched because Max Scherzer was injured. Joe gave up 4 runs in 5 innings. The Astros won that game. But the Nationals went on to win the World Series in 7 games. Joe received a World Series ring for being part of the team.
On June 29, 2020, Joe announced he would not play in the shortened 2020 season. This was due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On August 17, 2021, Joe was placed on the injured list again. He had another partial tear in his right elbow. On May 31, 2022, it was announced that Joe would need another Tommy John surgery. This ended his 2022 season.
Time with the San Francisco Giants
On January 30, 2023, Joe Ross signed a contract with the San Francisco Giants. He played in 8 games across different minor league teams. He pitched 14 innings in total. After the season, he became a free agent.
Playing for the Milwaukee Brewers (2024)
On December 12, 2023, Joe Ross signed a one-year deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. He started the season as a pitcher in their main rotation. He had 2 wins and 4 losses in 9 starts. On May 21, 2024, he was placed on the injured list. He had a low back strain. He was activated and returned to play on July 30.
