Joseph Aloysius Ruddy Sr. (born September 28, 1878 – died November 11, 1962) was an American athlete. He was a talented swimmer and water polo player. Joe Ruddy represented the United States at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri. He won two gold medals at these Olympic Games.
Olympic Achievements
Joe Ruddy showed his amazing skills at the 1904 Olympics. He helped the U.S. team win a gold medal in swimming. This was for the men's 4x50-yard freestyle relay race. He also earned a second gold medal in water polo. His team was the best in the water polo competition.
Family and Legacy
Joe Ruddy came from a family of athletes. His son, Ray Ruddy, also became an Olympic swimmer in 1928. Joe had two other sons and two daughters. His oldest son, Joseph Ruddy Jr., grew up to be a U.S. Navy admiral. Joe Ruddy passed away at his home in 1962. He was 84 years old. In 1977, he was honored for his achievements. He was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame. This shows how important he was to the sport.
