About Joe Wolfe Field
Joe Wolfe Field is a popular spot for baseball in North Adams. Besides the SteepleCats, other teams also use the field. In 2012, the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) Trailblazers baseball team played some of their home games here.
Local high school teams, like Drury High School and Charles H. McCann Technical High School, also play their baseball games at Joe Wolfe Field. It's also used for other youth sports, giving young athletes a great place to play.
A Look at Its History
Joe Wolfe Field was built in 1986. It was built on the same spot where an older baseball field, called Noel Field, used to be. Noel Field had been the main baseball spot for many years, but its stands and playing area were getting old. When Joe Wolfe Field was built, it got new seating areas and bright lights. The field itself was also made much better.
Why It's Called Joe Wolfe Field
Two important people helped make Joe Wolfe Field happen. One was John Barrett III, who was the mayor of North Adams at the time. The other was a local sports hero named Joe Wolfe. They worked hard to raise money and build the park.
Sadly, Joe Wolfe passed away in November 1986, shortly after the field was finished. To honor him, Mayor Barrett and others decided to name the field after Joe Wolfe. He was a big part of the community, playing semi-professional baseball, coaching young teams, and helping local sports groups.
Big Games and Upgrades
In 2005, the field got some cool new updates. An electronic scoreboard was added, so everyone could easily see the score. A new snack stand was also built, and the backstop behind home plate was improved.
Joe Wolfe Field has seen some exciting games. On July 4, 2006, a huge crowd of 6,714 fans came to watch a game between the SteepleCats and the Holyoke Giants. This was a record for the league! The field also hosted the league's All-Star Game in 2007, with 4,210 fans cheering on the players.
