Joel Carroll, born in September 1986 in Darwin, Northern Territory, is a talented Australian field hockey player. He played for the University team in the Darwin Hockey Association A-Grade league. He also played for the NT Stingers in the Australian Hockey League.
Joel was a member of Australia's junior Under 21 (U21) team. He also played for the senior men's national team. With the senior team, he won a gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. He also earned a gold medal at the 2010 Men's Hockey Champions Trophy. Joel was part of the Australian team that won a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Joel was born on September 11, 1986, in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. He grew up in the Northern Territory. His uncle, Joe Daby, was also a fantastic field hockey player. Joe Daby is considered one of the best players from the Northern Territory.
Joel is recognized as an Indigenous Australian Olympian. This recognition comes from the Australian Olympic Committee.
Joel's Field Hockey Journey
Joel Carroll is mainly a defender in field hockey. However, he has played other positions too. In 2003, he played as a right-midfield player, which he really enjoyed.
Early Club Success
In 2001 and 2002, Joel played A-Grade Hockey for the Nightcliff Tigers Hockey Club. His team won two championships in those years. In 2002, when he was just fifteen, he played for the Under 18 (U18) and U21 Northern Territory teams. He competed in the national championships.
Youngest Player in the League
In 2003, Joel became the youngest player in the Australian Hockey League. He was only 16 years old when he started for the NT Stingers. This was in their first game of the season against the NSW team. He continued to play for the team during their preseason games that year.
Playing for Australia's Junior Team
In January 2005, Joel was part of Australia's U21 national team. He played in a five-game test series against Malaysia in Brisbane. He was one of four players from Darwin, Northern Territory on that team. In June 2005, he was one of five players from the Northern Territory. They represented Australia on the U21 team at the World Cup.
Joining the National Team
In April 2009, Joel was chosen for the senior national squad. The new national team coach, Ric Charlesworth, picked him and thirteen other new players. These players had played fewer than ten games for the national team. The goal was to get the team ready for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Joel made his national team debut in 2009. In 2010, he represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games. He played in a game against Pakistan during the group stage. He helped his team win a gold medal at the Games. Also in 2010, he won another gold medal at the Champions Trophy.
Joel did not play in the Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia in May 2011. This was because he had an injury.
Preparing for the Olympics
In December 2011, Joel was named to the 2012 Summer Olympics training squad. This squad had twenty-eight players. He was one of two players from the Northern Territory chosen for the squad. The team for the Olympics was finalized in June 2012.
Joel trained with the team from January 18 to mid-March in Perth, Western Australia. During this training camp in February, he played in a four-nations test series. The teams included the Kookaburras (Australia's main team), Australia A Squad, the Netherlands, and Argentina.
Awards and Recognition
In 2009, Joel Carroll was nominated for the Qantas NT Sportsperson of the Year award. In 2012, he was a finalist for the Toll Transitions and Toll Marine Logistics Sports Award. This award was presented by the Sun Newspapers.
