Joel Hamling (born 9 April 1993) is a professional Australian rules footballer. He plays for the Sydney Swans in the Australian Football League (AFL).
Joel has also played for the Western Bulldogs from 2015 to 2016. He then played for Fremantle between 2017 and 2023. Before that, he was first chosen by Geelong in the 2011 AFL draft.

Joel Hamling's Early Life and Junior Football
Joel Hamling was born on 9 April 1993. He is from the Yorta Yorta Indigenous people. He was born in Denmark, Western Australia. However, he grew up in Broome.
Joel played junior football for the Claremont 'colts' team. This is their Under 18 team. They play in the WAFL.
Joel Hamling's AFL Career
Starting with Geelong and the Western Bulldogs
Joel was chosen by the Geelong Football Club in the 2011 national draft. He was pick number 32. He spent three years with Geelong. During this time, he did not play any senior games.
At the end of the 2014 season, he moved to the Western Bulldogs. He joined them as a 'delisted free agent'. This means he was no longer on Geelong's list. Other clubs could then sign him.
Joel played his first senior AFL game in 2015. This was in Round 9 against Greater Western Sydney. The game was played at Etihad Stadium.
Winning a Premiership and Moving to Fremantle
A big moment for Joel was in 2016. He was part of the Western Bulldogs team that won the AFL premiership. This is like winning the championship in Australian Rules Football.
After the 2016 season, Joel moved back to Western Australia. He was traded to the Fremantle Football Club. This meant he changed teams.
Dealing with Injuries
Joel faced some tough times with injuries. He missed the whole 2020 season. This was because of an ankle injury.
In 2021, he only played one game. He hurt the same ankle again in the first game of the season. He needed surgery on his ankle in July 2021.
Joel returned to play in Round 2 of the 2022 AFL season. This was during Fremantle's game against St Kilda.
Joining the Sydney Swans
After the 2023 AFL season, Joel Hamling made another move. He signed with the Sydney Swans. He joined them as an 'unrestricted free agent'. This means he was free to choose any club.
