In 2000, he was named the Student of the Year in Miami-Dade County. He was the top student when he graduated from Miami Southridge Senior High School in 2001.
He went to Cornell University. In 2005, he earned his first degree in biology and society. While in college, he did research in the Amazon rainforest in Pará, Brazil. He studied how mercury affected the water. He also learned about the Kayapo people. He wrote about how culture affects how people react to health risks.
In 2011, Joel Salinas earned his medical degree. He went to the University of Miami School of Medicine. In 2006, while in medical school, doctors found a small growth in his brain. It was successfully removed. The growth was not harmful. From 2008 to 2009, he was a research fellow. He studied brain imaging at the University of Iowa. During this time, he was in a serious car accident. He also earned a business degree. He won a big prize in a business plan competition.
