The John Ballantine House is a historic house in Newark, New Jersey. It's like a museum where you can learn about the past. This special house is located at 49 Washington Street in the Washington Park area.
It was built in 1884 for John Holme Ballantine and his wife, Jeannette. John's father, Peter Ballantine, started the famous Ballantine beer company. The house is important because of its amazing design and how well its history has been kept. Today, the Newark Museum owns and takes care of the house. You can even take tours to see what it was like to live there long ago!
What the House Looks Like
The Ballantine House is a three-story building. It is made of salmon-colored bricks with stone decorations. The roof is flat on top. The front of the house is not perfectly even, with some parts sticking out.
The main entrance has a stone porch with rounded arches. These arches are held up by strong granite columns. Inside, the house was decorated by a New York company called D. S. Hess Company. They made beautiful furniture and decorations. For example, the dining room had special panels that looked like old Spanish leather.
The Ballantine Family's Story
John Holme Ballantine became the head of the Ballantine Brewery in 1883. This happened after his father passed away. John himself died in 1895.
The house was designed by an architect named George Edward Harney from New York City. When it was built, the Ballantine House was one of the most impressive homes facing Washington Park. Many grand houses used to be there, but now the Ballantine House is the only one left. The Ballantine family owned the house until 1920.
The House as a Museum
The Newark Museum bought the house in 1937. They also got all the original bills and records. These papers show how the house was built, decorated, and changed over time. This makes the house's history very complete.
During the Christmas season, the house is decorated in a traditional Victorian style. It is filled with holly and other winter plants. In 1994, the museum published a short book about the house. This was when the house reopened after a big two-year renovation. The Ballantine House was officially named a National Historic Landmark in 1985. This means it is a very important historical place.
