John William Bardo (October 28, 1948 – March 12, 2019) was an important American educator. He was known for leading universities. He served as the 13th President of Wichita State University (WSU). Before that, he was the 10th Chancellor of Western Carolina University (WCU) for 16 years. He helped these universities grow a lot.

About John Bardo
His Early Life and School
John Bardo grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He went to Oak Hills High School. After high school, he studied economics at the University of Cincinnati. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1970.
He continued his studies at Ohio University. There, he earned a Master of Arts degree in sociology in 1971. He then got his doctorate degree from Ohio State University in 1973.
Starting His Career
In 1976, John Bardo began working at Wichita State University. He joined the sociology department. During this time, he won a special Fulbright scholarship. This allowed him to study in Australia.
In 1983, Bardo left Wichita State. He became the Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Texas State University. A Dean is a leader in a university, in charge of a specific area of study. After three years, he became a Provost. A Provost is a very senior leader, often in charge of all academic programs. He was a Provost at the University of North Florida and Bridgewater State College.
Leading Western Carolina University
On July 1, 1995, John Bardo became the 10th Chancellor of Western Carolina University. A Chancellor is the top leader of a university. He held this important role for 16 years.
During his time as Chancellor, the university grew a lot. The number of students almost doubled from 1996. Many new buildings were added to the campus. He also helped create an honors college for top students. In 2011, Bardo decided to leave his leadership role. He wanted to go back to teaching. Western Carolina University named a building after him. It is called the "John W Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center."
Leading Wichita State University
In April 2012, John Bardo was chosen as the 13th President of Wichita State University. The President is also a top leader of a university. This was a return for him, as he had worked at WSU earlier in his career. He was there from 1976 to 1983. In 2017, Wichita State also named a building in his honor.
His Passing
John Bardo passed away on March 12, 2019. He died in Wichita due to a long-term lung condition. His final resting place is Lakeview Cemetery in Wichita.
