The John Barker House is a very old and special house in Wallingford, Connecticut. It was built way back in 1756. This house is important because it's one of the oldest brick houses in Connecticut. It also has a unique roof style called a gambrel roof. Because of its history and design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

What Does It Look Like?
The house is two-and-a-half stories tall and made of brick. It has a special roof called a gambrel roof. This type of roof has two different slopes on each side, making it look unique. There are chimneys at both ends of the house.
The front of the house has five window sections. The main door is in the middle. Above the door, there's a small window with six panes of glass. The windows on the first floor have a slightly curved top. The windows on the second floor are placed right under the roof's edge.
A Look Inside
Inside, the house follows a common design for its time. It has a central hallway with rooms on either side. Many of the original parts and decorations are still there. The brickwork around the fireplaces is very interesting. Also, the main bedroom upstairs has special molding and wood panels that are quite beautiful.
Who Was John Barker?
The house was built in 1756 for a man named John Barker. He was a very successful farmer in the area. His grandfather was a merchant who traded a lot with Barbados.
The design of the John Barker House is similar to Connecticut Hall. This building was built at Yale in 1752. This suggests that the people who built John Barker's house might have known about Connecticut Hall. The clay used for the bricks probably came from the Connecticut River area, near North Haven.
