Colonel John Blossett was an Irish soldier. He led a group of British soldiers, called the British Legion. This group helped Simon Bolivar in the wars to free South American countries from Spain. These wars are known as the South American wars of independence.
Early Life and Army Days
John Blossett was born in Ireland. His family had a history of military service. One of his ancestors, Salomon Blosset de Loche, was a general. He helped William of Orange become king in 1688.
John Blossett joined the British Army in 1798. He served in a group called the 10th Foot. He worked his way up through the ranks. By 1814, he became a captain. When he left the army in 1817, he was a major.
Helping Simon Bolivar
In 1819, John Blossett joined a special mission. He went to South America to help Simon Bolivar. Bolivar was fighting for independence from Spain. Blossett became the leader of the British group helping Bolivar. Bolivar gave him the rank of colonel.
This group of British soldiers helped Bolivar's army. They played an important part in the fight for freedom.
His Legacy
John Blossett died during the expedition in South America. He was shot by another colonel.
His granddaughter was a famous actress named Ethel Lavenu. Her son, Tyrone Power Sr., also became a well-known actor. His grandson, Tyrone Power, was also a very famous actor.
