John Boutté (born November 3, 1958) is an American jazz singer. He lives in New Orleans, Louisiana. He has been singing professionally since the mid-1990s.

John Boutté is known for his many music styles. He sings jazz, R&B, gospel, Latin, and blues. He is the younger brother of famous jazz and gospel singer Lillian Boutté. He is also related to the well-known cartoonist George Herriman.

Life and Music Journey

John Boutté grew up in New Orleans. His family was Creole and Catholic. From a young age, he experienced the city's unique culture. This included exciting Mardi Gras parades and special jazz funerals.

He also loved listening to R&B music. Artists like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye were his favorites. In school, he played trumpet and cornet in marching bands. He even started an a cappella group with friends. They would sing on the streets.

From Army to Artist

John studied business at Xavier University of Louisiana. He was part of the ROTC program there. After college, he joined the U.S. Army and served for four years.

When he returned home, he first worked at a credit union. But his life changed when he met Stevie Wonder. Wonder told John he had a great talent for singing. This made John think seriously about becoming a professional singer. Soon after, he joined his sister Lillian on her music tour in Europe. This was the start of his amazing music career.

John Boutté has worked with many other talented artists. He was a special guest singer on the album Mardi Gras Mambo. This album was recorded in New Orleans with the Cuban group Cubanismo!.

In recent years, John has often worked with Paul Sanchez. Paul is a guitarist and singer who used to be in the band Cowboy Mouth. They released an album together in 2009 called Stew Called New Orleans. John also sang lead on three songs for John Scofield's 2009 album, Piety Street.

John's nieces, Tricia Boutté (also known as Sister Teedy) and Tanya E. Boutté, are also singers.

The Treme Connection

One of John Boutté's most famous songs is "Treme Song." It is from his album Jambalaya. This song became the main theme song for the HBO TV show, Treme.

John Boutté also appeared in the TV series himself. He sang in the Season 1 Finale. He also performed several songs in Season 2, episode 1. You can see him singing on stage in Season 3, episode 10.

In 2008, his album Good Neighbor won "Best Traditional Jazz Album." In 2009, his song "Hey God" with Paul Sanchez won "Song of the Year." Their album Stew Called New Orleans also won "Best County/Folk/Roots Rock Album" that same year. In 2010, his "Treme Song" won "Song of the Year."
