John Breen (born 1827, died December 13, 1875) was a brave Irish sailor. He fought for the United States during the American Civil War. Breen earned the highest award for courage in battle, the Medal of Honor. He received this honor for his actions on October 3, 1862. The award was officially given to him on April 3, 1863.
Life and Service
John Breen was born in Ireland in 1827. His parents were William and Margaret Breen. Later, he moved to New York. In 1852, he joined the United States Navy for the first time. He used the name Charles Mercer back then.
After three years, he left the Navy. But when the American Civil War started in 1861, he joined again. This time, he used his real name, John Breen. During the war, he served on several ships. These included the USS Brandywine, the USS Seymour, and the USS Commodore Perry.
Earning the Medal of Honor
John Breen was serving aboard the USS Commodore Perry. On October 3, 1862, his ship was near Petersburg, Virginia. Confederate soldiers were positioned along the Blackwater River. They were trying to attack. Breen helped to successfully push back these enemy troops. His brave actions that day earned him the Medal of Honor.
Life After the War
After the Civil War ended, Breen and his wife, Ellen Grant, moved to Milwaukee. He continued working as a sailor. John Breen passed away on December 13, 1875. He died from pneumonia. He is buried at the Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum in Milwaukee.
