John Edward Deane Browne, 5th Baron Kilmaine (born March 18, 1878 – died August 27, 1946) was an important person in both Irish and British life. He was a politician and owned a lot of land. He also held a special position in the British Parliament, serving in the House of Lords as an Irish representative peer from 1911 to 1946. This meant he represented Ireland in the UK Parliament.
Life of John Edward Deane Browne
John Edward Deane Browne was born in England. He was the only child of Francis Browne, 4th Baron Kilmaine and Alice Emily Shute. His uncle was Sir Cameron Shute. John went to school at Magdalen College, Oxford, which is a famous university in England. He also studied in other countries.
When his father passed away, John became the 5th Baron Kilmaine. In 1911, he was chosen to be an Irish representative peer. This role allowed him to speak for Ireland in the UK Parliament.
John inherited a lot of land from his father. He sold their family home, Gaulstown Park, in County Westmeath, Ireland, in 1918. Later, in 1925, he sold their estate at Nealepark in Neale, County Mayo and all their remaining lands in Ireland. After selling these properties, he moved to Great Britain.
Lord Kilmaine passed away in 1946.
Family Life and Children
On December 17, 1906, John Edward Deane Browne married Lady Aline Kennedy. She was the daughter of the 3rd Marquess of Ailsa. John and Aline had three children together:
- John Francis Archibald Browne, 6th Baron Kilmaine (born September 22, 1902 – died July 26, 1978)
- Hon. Henry George Angus Browne (born October 9, 1911 – died September 8, 1942). Henry bravely served in the Second World War and was killed in action near El Alamein.
- Hon. Alicia Evelyn Browne (born February 1909 – died 1992). She married Commander Edward St John Edmonstone. He was the son of Sir Archibald Edmonstone, 5th Baronet.
