Sir John Byron (born around 1526, died in 1600) was an important English nobleman and politician. He lived during the time of Queen Elizabeth I. He was also known by a fun nickname: Little Sir John with the Great Beard. He owned a lot of land and was given the special title of a knight.
Who Was Sir John Byron?
Sir John Byron was the son of another important person, Sir John Byron (died 1567). He grew up in Clayton Hall near Manchester. Later, he lived in Royton. He then moved to Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire. He inherited Newstead Abbey from his father.
A Knight and Sheriff
Sir John Byron had important jobs in his community. He was the High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1572. A High Sheriff was like a chief law officer for a county. He also became the High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire in 1596.
In 1579, Queen Elizabeth I herself made him a knight. This was a great honor!
His Family Legacy
Sir John Byron married a woman named Alice Strelley. They had seven children together. They had four sons and three daughters. Their oldest son, Anthony, sadly died before his father. So, Sir John's next son, Sir John Byron (died 1623), took over after him.
One of Sir John's daughters married Sir Thomas Hutchinson. Their granddaughter, Margaret Hutchinson, is a very interesting part of history. She is an ancestor of Andrew Jackson, who later became a President of the United States!
