The John C. Pollock House is a historic home in Wyoming, Ohio, United States. It was built around the 1870s. This house was once the home of a successful businessman. It is now a historic site because of its special design.

Architecture of the Pollock House

The Pollock House is a one-story building with a basement that you can walk out of. It is made of wood siding and has a strong stone base. The roof is made of metal, and other parts are wood.

The windows have decorative covers, like small roofs. A small porch covers the main entrance. This house is one of the best examples of the Italianate style in the area. The Italianate style was popular in the 1800s. It often features wide roof overhangs and decorative brackets.

The house has an "L" shape, which is called an ell. The main entrance and porch are on the front of this "L" shape. The porch has some of the house's most detailed features. These include a fancy railing (called a balustrade) and a small window above the front door (a transom window). The pillars on the porch also have flattened corners (called chamfered).

The outside of the house has wide roof overhangs (called eaves) with decorative trim (a cornice). The window covers have "gingerbread" carvings. These are fancy, carved wooden decorations, like brackets and decorative bargeboards. All these details make the house look like it was designed by a master architect, even though it is not huge.

Why Wyoming Grew

Wyoming became a successful city partly because it had good ways to travel. It was near an old road that connected Cincinnati to places further north. In 1806, parts of this road were straightened. This new road is now called Springfield Pike and goes through the middle of Wyoming.

By the 1830s, another important way to travel appeared. The Miami and Erie Canal was built a short distance to the east in 1828. A village called Lockland grew up along this canal. Then, in 1851, railroads came to the area. The Cincinnati, Hamilton, and Dayton Railroad was built near Lockland and Wyoming.

Because Wyoming was close to the factories in Lockland and had easy transportation to the growing city of Cincinnati, many rich business owners bought farms there. They built large country homes. Most of these homes were built in the Wyoming Hills area. This growth continued until the Great Depression in the 1930s. John C. Pollock was one of these businessmen. He was a partner in an insurance company in Cincinnati called Pollock and Whittlesey.

Becoming a Historic Site

In 1979, a local group that works to save old buildings started a survey. They wanted to find all the historic buildings in Wyoming. This effort led to many homes and the Wyoming Presbyterian Church being nominated. In 1985, eighteen houses and one historic district were suggested to be added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The National Register of Historic Places is a list of important historic places in the United States. In 1986, the Pollock House was added to this list. It was chosen because of its important and special architecture. It is one of five houses on Reily Road that are on the Register. The others are the Charles Fay House, the Luethstrom-Hurin House, the Louis Sawyer House, and the William Stearns House.
