Serving in the Civil War

In 1861, at the start of the Civil War, John C. Walker joined the Union Army. He was given the rank of colonel. A colonel is a high-ranking officer who leads many soldiers.

Leading the 35th Indiana Regiment

Colonel Walker was put in charge of the 35th Indiana Infantry Regiment. This group of soldiers was also known as the "First Irish." They played a part in the war efforts for the Union.

Challenges and Changes

During his time as a colonel, John C. Walker faced some difficulties. He had disagreements with other important leaders, including Governor Morton of Indiana. Because of these disagreements, he was removed from his command. He returned to Indiana, reportedly due to health reasons.

Later, John C. Walker became involved with a group called the Copperheads. This group wanted peace during the war and sometimes disagreed with the Union government's actions. Because of his involvement, he had to leave the United States and went to the United Kingdom. He stayed there until the war ended.

After the War

Once the American Civil War was over, John C. Walker returned to Indiana. He went back to his original profession and continued his work as a physician.
