John Caryll the younger facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Caryll (born December 9, 1667 – died April 1736) was an important person in a group called the Jacobites. He held a special title among them: the second Baron Caryll of Durford.

John Caryll was a good friend of the famous poet Alexander Pope. He was born in West Grinstead, Sussex, England. His parents were Richard Caryll and Frances Bedingfield. John Caryll became the Baron after his uncle, who was also named John Caryll, passed away in 1711.

In 1686, John Caryll married Elizabeth Harrington. They had many children together – four sons and six daughters.

His Family and Legacy

When John Caryll passed away in April 1736, his grandson, John Baptist Caryll, took over his Jacobite title. This grandson was the eldest son of John Caryll's own eldest son, who had died earlier in 1718.

John Baptist Caryll, the grandson, later sold the family's lands in West Grinstead and Harting. He then went to live in Rome and worked for Charles Edward Stuart. Charles Edward Stuart was known as the "Young Pretender" and was the Stuart family's choice for king, recognized by the Jacobites as "King Charles III."

Charles Edward Stuart gave John Baptist Caryll an important job as his Secretary of State. He also made him a Knight of the Thistle, which is a special honor. John Baptist Caryll returned to France in 1777 and died in Dunkirk on March 7, 1788.

Today, John Caryll's family has descendants living in different parts of the world, including Texas and Washington D.C. in the United States.
