Playing career 1982–2001

John David Chabot was born on May 18, 1962. He is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and coach. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1983 to 1991. After that, he played in Europe until he retired in 2001. Later, he became a coach in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He also spent two seasons as an assistant coach in the NHL.

Playing Hockey: From Youth to the NHL

John Chabot started playing hockey when he was young. In 1975, he played in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. He was part of a team from Gatineau, Canada.

Becoming a Star in Junior Hockey

In 1979, John was the very first player picked in the QMJHL draft by the Hull Olympiques. He was a fantastic player in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. In the 1981–82 season, he won two big awards. He was named the QMJHL Briere Trophy (MVP) winner. He also won the CCM QMJHL Player of the Year award while playing for Sherbrooke.

Playing in the National Hockey League

The Montreal Canadiens drafted John in 1980. He played 508 games in the National Hockey League. He played for the Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Detroit Red Wings. In his first year with the Canadiens, he scored 18 goals. He had a total of 43 points, which is a great start for a rookie!

Hockey Career in Europe

In 1991, John Chabot moved to Europe to play hockey. He first joined HC Milan in Italy. In 1992, he moved to Germany. He played nine years in Germany's top league, the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. He played for teams like Preussen Berlin (which later became Berlin Capitals). He also played for the Frankfurt Lions for three years. His last season as a professional player was with Eisbären Berlin in 2000–01.

Coaching Hockey: Guiding Young Players

After his playing career, John Chabot became a hockey coach. He coached junior teams in the QMJHL. These teams included the Hull Olympiques, Gatineau Olympiques, and Acadie-Bathurst Titan.

Success as a Junior Coach

During his four years coaching the Gatineau Olympiques, his team was very successful. They made it to the Memorial Cup tournament twice. The Memorial Cup is a big championship for junior hockey teams in Canada. John also spent one year as an assistant coach for the New York Islanders in the NHL.

John Chabot went to high school at D'Arcy McGee in Hull, Quebec. He is from the Algonquin First Nation, specifically from Kitigan Zibi. He cares a lot about his community.
