John David Chabot (born May 18, 1962) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and coach. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1983 to 1991. After that, he played in Europe until he retired in 2001. Later, he became a coach in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He also spent two seasons as an assistant coach in the NHL.

Playing Hockey: From Youth to the NHL
John Chabot started playing hockey at a young age. In 1975, he played in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. He was part of a team from Gatineau, Canada.
Drafted by the Canadiens
In 1979, John was the very first player picked in the QMJHL draft by the Hull Olympiques. He was an amazing player in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. In the 1981–82 season, he won the Briere Trophy as the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP). He was also named the CCM QMJHL Player of the Year.
In 1980, the Montreal Canadiens picked him in the NHL draft. John played 508 games in the National Hockey League. He played for the Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Detroit Red Wings. In his first year with the Canadiens, he scored 18 goals and earned 43 points.
Playing in Europe
After his time in the NHL, John Chabot moved to Europe. In 1991, he joined HC Milan in Italy. In 1992, he moved to Germany. He played nine years in Germany's top hockey league, the Deutsche Eishockey Liga.
He played for Preussen Berlin, which later changed its name to Berlin Capitals. Then, he spent three years with the Frankfurt Lions. His last season as a professional player was with Eisbären Berlin in 2000–01.
Coaching Teams
After retiring as a player, John Chabot became a hockey coach. He coached junior teams in the QMJHL. These teams included the Hull Olympiques, Gatineau Olympiques, and Acadie-Bathurst Titan.
While coaching the Gatineau Olympiques for four years, his team made it to the Memorial Cup twice. The Memorial Cup is a big championship for junior hockey teams. He also worked as an assistant coach for the New York Islanders in the NHL for one year.
Off the Ice
John Chabot went to high school at D'Arcy McGee in Hull, Quebec. He is an Algonquin person from Kitigan Zibi. He often visits Indigenous communities across Canada. There, he gives speeches and runs hockey skills camps for kids.
When he visited students at the Matawa Learning Center, he shared how hockey helped him stay out of trouble when he was young. He told them, "It's a place to go with your friends that is healthy." He also said, "It gives the opportunity to feel better about yourself and if you feel better about yourself you make better choices."
John Chabot is also the president of Anishinabeg Communications. This company helps with promotional items, printing, graphic design, and brand development.
