John Clarence Stewart (born August 16, 1988) is an American actor and singer. He is most famous for playing Simon in the TV show Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (2020–21). Before that, he was known for his roles as Alex Wesley in Luke Cage (2016–18) and Lionel in What/If (2019).
Growing Up and Starting Out
John Clarence Stewart was born in 1988 in Stone Mountain, Georgia. He went to Shiloh High School and later George Walton Academy on a football scholarship. He then returned to Shiloh High School for his final year. During high school, he performed in the musical Once on This Island.
He loved theater and continued his studies at Columbus State University, earning a degree in Performance Theater in 2009. He also studied at Kennesaw State University, getting another degree in Theater and Performance Studies and Dance in 2012.
After college, John worked with Kaiser Permanente doing educational theater. He also performed in many plays at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre, including The Whipping Man and Choir Boy. He even taught at the theater's summer camp. He moved to New York City and then to Los Angeles to follow his dream of acting.
John's Acting Journey
John Stewart started his professional acting career in 2013 in the play The Whipping Man at the Alliance Theatre. He also starred in other plays like brownsville song (b-side for tray) in 2014 and Fit for a Queen in 2016.
In 2015, John made his first TV appearance in Gotham. He then had guest roles in several other TV shows. His first big TV role was as Alex Wesley in Luke Cage, which he played from 2016 to 2018.
In 2019, he became even more recognized for playing Lionel in the Netflix series What/If. His most well-known role came in 2020 when he played Simon in Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. He has also appeared in shows like P-Valley and 9-1-1: Lone Star.
