John Cole, 1st Baron Mountflorence (born October 13, 1709 – died November 30, 1767) was an important Irish politician and a noble. He was known as a "peer," which means he held a special high rank in society.
Meet John Cole
John Cole was born in Dublin, Ireland. His father, also named John Cole, was a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Enniskillen. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the government.
Early Life and Education
In 1726, when he was about 17 years old, John Cole started studying at Trinity College Dublin. This was a very important university in Ireland.
A Career in Politics
Just four years after starting college, in 1730, John Cole followed in his father's footsteps. He became the MP for Enniskillen, the same area his father had represented. He kept this job for many years.
In 1733, he also took on another important role: High Sheriff of Fermanagh. A High Sheriff was a top law enforcement officer in a county.
Becoming a Baron
In 1760, John Cole received a very special honor. He was made a "Baron" in the Peerage of Ireland. This meant he became Baron Mountflorence, named after Florence Court in County Fermanagh. Being a Baron meant he was part of the nobility and could sit in the Irish House of Lords.
The next year, he officially took his seat in the Irish House of Lords. He continued to serve there until he passed away six years later, at the age of 58.
His son, William Willoughby Cole, took over his title as Baron. Later, William Willoughby Cole was given an even higher title and became the Earl of Enniskillen in 1789.
