He was the very first major Democrat to say he would run for president in the 2020 election. His campaign started with an article he wrote for Washington Post. On the same day, he also started a Twitter account and a YouTube account. He posted a video there to tell people his ideas. John Delaney ended his campaign in January 2020.

The Start of the Campaign

People started hearing rumors about John Delaney's campaign a day before his article was published. This was a very early announcement for a presidential candidate.

A writer named Harry J. Enten from FiveThirtyEight said it was unusual. Usually, candidates wait much longer to announce they are running. Before Delaney, Pierre S. du Pont IV held the record for the earliest announcement. He announced his campaign for the 1988 election in 1986. That was 615 days before the first important voting event, called the Iowa caucuses.

Delaney stopped his campaign on January 31, 2020. This was because his support in polls went down. He also did not get to join the important debates where candidates talk about their plans.
