John Downman was a very busy artist. He showed 148 of his works at the Royal Academy between 1769 and 1819. Most of these were portraits of people. He also painted "fancy subjects," which are pictures that tell a story or show an imagined scene. Some of these included 'Rosalind' for the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery, 'The Death of Lucretia,' and 'Fair Rosamond.'

In 1795, he was chosen to be an associate of the Royal Academy. This was an important recognition of his talent.

The British Museum bought many of his colored drawings in 1884. These included several portraits. He also created many beautiful drawings using red and black chalk. Some of his miniature portraits, which are very small paintings, are also well-known. Other artists, like Francesco Bartolozzi, made engravings of his works.
