John Earle (1824–1903) was a smart British scholar. He studied the Anglo-Saxon language. This was an old form of English. He taught this language at the University of Oxford. He was a professor there two times!

John Earle wrote many books. Some of his famous books were Two Saxon Chronicles Parallel (1865) and Anglo-Saxon Literature (1884). Another scholar, Charles Plummer, later updated one of Earle's books.

His Early Life and Work

John Earle was born on January 29, 1824. His family lived in Elston, South Devon. He was the oldest son of John Earle, who was a farmer and landowner.

He went to Oriel College, Oxford for his education. There, he did very well in his studies of classics. In 1848, he became a fellow at the college. This meant he was a special member of the university.

In 1857, he became the rector of Swanswick. This is a church leader position. Swanswick is a town near Bath.

In 1863, John Earle married Jane Rolleston. Her father was also a rector. Later, in 1871, Earle became a prebendary of Wells. This was another role in the church. Wells is a small city in Somerset.

John Earle enjoyed fun activities too. He liked boating, riding horses, and gardening.

He continued to be a professor at Oxford and the rector of Swanswick until he passed away in 1903.
