Occupation Luthier

John Edward Betts (1755–1823) was a famous English luthier. A luthier is a skilled craftsperson who builds or repairs stringed instruments. Think of instruments like violins, cellos, guitars, and harps! Betts was one of the most important instrument dealers in London during his time. He was also one of the first people to bring beautiful Italian instruments to England. He is buried in Cripplegate Church in London.

Becoming a Luthier

John Betts started learning his craft in 1765. He became an apprentice to Richard Duke, who was also a well-known violin maker. An apprentice learns a skill by working with an experienced master. After Richard Duke passed away, John Betts bought his business from Duke's daughter. This helped him start his own successful journey.

Starting His Own Business

By 1781, John Betts was working independently. This means he had his own workshop and was making instruments on his own. He even hired his first apprentice that year. Over time, many talented British craftsmen worked for him. These included famous names like Bernard Simon Fendt and Vincenzo Panormo. Working with Betts helped these craftsmen become even better at their skills.

The Betts Family Business

John Betts taught his younger brother, Arthur, how to make instruments. When John passed away in 1823, Arthur took over the family business. Under Arthur's leadership, the workshop started focusing more on making copies of old, historic instruments. This was a way to keep the designs and sounds of classic instruments alive.

The End of an Era

Later, Arthur's sons, Arthur II and John II, inherited the business. They continued the family tradition for some time. However, the Betts instrument shop eventually closed its doors in 1867. Even though the shop closed, the Betts family left an important mark on the world of musical instruments. They helped bring beautiful sounds to life for many years.
