John Edwin Field (born 20 September 1936 – died 21 October 2020) was a British scientist. He was an experimental physicist, which means he studied physics by doing experiments. His work focused on how solid materials behave.
He was especially interested in how materials react to strong forces or energy. This included studying everything from how things wear away (like erosion) to how explosives work.
John Field's Education and Career
John Field first studied physics at University College London. After that, he moved to the University of Cambridge. There, he joined the famous Cavendish Laboratory.
At Cambridge, he earned his PhD. His research was about the physics and chemistry of solid materials. John stayed at Cambridge for his entire career. He became the head of his research group. He was also the Deputy Head of the Cavendish Laboratory. This shows he was a very important leader in science. He was also a Fellow at Magdalene College.
Awards and Achievements
John Field's amazing work was recognized with several important honors. In 1987, he received an OBE. This is a special award from the British monarch for great achievements.
In 1994, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group of top scientists in the UK. Being a Fellow means he was considered one of the best in his field.
