John Eppel, born on September 19, 1947, is a famous writer from Zimbabwe. He writes short stories, novels, and poems. In 1990, he won the Ingrid Jonker Prize for his poetry book, "Spoils of War." This book shared his experiences as a soldier.

Early Life

John Eppel was born in Lydenburg, South Africa. When he was four, his family moved to Colleen Bawn, a small mining town in what is now Zimbabwe. He went to Milton High School in Bulawayo. Later, he studied at the University of Natal in South Africa. He earned a master's degree in English there.

Career

John Eppel has written over 20 books! One of his books, "The Giraffe Man," was even translated into French. He also created a writing course for a university. He wrote study guides to help students learn about literature.

He won the Ingrid Jonker Prize for his first poetry book, "Spoils of War." In 1993, he also won the MNet Prize for his novel, D G G Berry's the Great North Road. His second novel, Hatchings, was nominated for the MNet prize too.

His books are studied in universities across South Africa. Today, he teaches English at Christian Brothers College, Bulawayo.

John Eppel got married when he was 34 years old. He has three children named Ben, Ruth, and Joe. His ex-wife, Shari, is also a poet. She is known for her work as a human rights activist.
