Sir John Floyer (born March 3, 1649 – died February 1, 1734) was an important English physician and writer. He made big contributions to medicine, especially in how doctors checked on their patients.

Early Life and Education

John Floyer was born on March 3, 1649. He grew up in a quiet village called Hints. This village is close to Lichfield in Staffordshire, England. He was the third child of Richard and Elizabeth Floyer. John went to the University of Oxford to get his education.

His Medical Work

Sir John Floyer worked as a doctor in Lichfield. He was known for giving good advice. For example, he advised the mother of a young Dr Johnson to take him to Queen Anne. This was for a special touch to cure a sickness called the king's evil. This happened on March 30, 1714.

One of Floyer's most famous ideas was checking a patient's pulse rate. He even created a special watch to help doctors measure pulses accurately. This was a new and very helpful tool for doctors at the time.

He also believed that taking cold baths was good for health. Floyer was one of the first to describe changes in the lungs related to a condition called emphysema. This showed his deep understanding of the human body.

Family Life

Sir John Floyer married Mary Fleetwood in April 1680. Mary was a widow from Lichfield. They had a son, also named John Floyer. Their son later became a Member of Parliament for Tamworth. Sir John Floyer passed away on February 1, 1734.
