John Hector McArthur (born March 31, 1934 – died August 20, 2019) was an important Canadian-American expert in how organizations work. He was a professor and served as the 7th leader, called a Dean, of the famous Harvard Business School from 1980 to 1995.

Early Life and Education
John McArthur was born on March 31, 1934, in Vancouver, Canada. He grew up in a nearby town called Burnaby, British Columbia. His father worked as a government grain inspector, and his mother was a nurse.
John went to Burnaby South High School. After that, he studied at the University of British Columbia. In 1957, he earned a degree in Commerce, focusing on Forestry. He then continued his studies at the Harvard Business School. There, he earned two more degrees: an MBA in 1959 and a doctorate (DBA) in 1963.
A Career in Business Education
John McArthur began teaching at the Harvard Business School in 1962. He became a Professor of Financial Management in 1973. By 1980, he was a Professor of Business Administration.
From 1980 to 1995, he held a very important job: he was the seventh Dean of the Harvard Business School. As Dean, he made big changes to the school's programs and buildings. People noticed his work, and it was even featured in Business Week magazine and The Harvard Crimson newspaper.
One of John McArthur's main goals was to create a strong, helpful community at the school. He believed in working together. After leaving Harvard, he also advised the President of The World Bank from 1995 to 2005.
Helping Hospitals and Canada
John McArthur also played a key role in healthcare. He helped bring together two major hospitals linked to Harvard University: Brigham and Women's and Massachusetts General Hospital. This led to the creation of Partners HealthCare, where he was a founding Co-Chair.
He also served on many different boards. He was the Chair of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, which is based in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was also a vital member of the Canadian Advisory Board for the Harvard Business School.
Awards and Recognition
John McArthur received several honors for his work.
- In 2015, he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada. This award recognized his achievements as a leader in business education. It also honored his continued advice to Canada's public and private sectors.
- In 2016, he received The Harvard Medal. This award is given for outstanding service to Harvard University.
The John H. McArthur Canadian Fellowship was created in 1998 at the Harvard Business School. This special scholarship helps Canadian students who want to study for their MBA. It is named after John McArthur, who was from British Columbia, and is supported by generous donations from Canadian alumni.
John McArthur passed away on August 20, 2019, at the age of 85.
