About John Henry Campbell

His Early Life and Family

John Henry Campbell was born in 1757 in Herefordshire, England. His parents were English. Later, his family moved from England to Dublin, Ireland. In Dublin, Campbell's father started a business with a printer named Daniel Graisberry.

John Henry Campbell had a family of his own, including at least two sons and a daughter. One of his sons, John, lived in Belfast and designed patterns for fabrics like damask and linen. Another son, Charles, was an army officer. Campbell's daughter, Cecilia Margaret Nairn, also became a landscape artist, just like her father. John Henry Campbell passed away on May 10, 1828.

John Henry Campbell studied art at the Dublin Society School. After his studies, he became known as a "topographical landscape painter." This means he specialized in painting detailed pictures of specific places and their natural features. He often painted the beautiful countryside around Dublin and Wicklow.

Early in his career, Campbell also painted portraits using watercolors. For example, he painted portraits of the Caulfeild family in 1786. He started showing his artwork to the public around 1800. He exhibited his landscapes in Dublin at places like Allen's and Parliament House. From 1809 to 1819, he regularly showed his paintings.

In 1826, Campbell was one of the artists who exhibited at the very first show of the Royal Hibernian Academy. He showed a painting called "Moonlight." In 1828, he submitted six more landscapes to their exhibition. Campbell admired the artist Paul Sandby and even copied some of his paintings to learn from them. He mostly worked with watercolors, but he also created some paintings using oil paints.

Today, you can find seven of Campbell's landscapes at the National Gallery of Ireland. The British Museum also has two of his artworks. In 1966, the Neptune Gallery held a special exhibition to look back at all of Campbell's work.
