John Hervey, 1st Earl of Bristol (born August 27, 1665 – died January 20, 1751), was an important English politician. He was known for his work in the government and for supporting big changes in England's history.

John Hervey was born in Bury St Edmunds, a town in Suffolk, England. His father was Sir Thomas Hervey. John went to school in Bury and then studied at Clare College, Cambridge University. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Bury St Edmunds in March 1694, following in his father's footsteps.

Becoming a Nobleman

In March 1703, John Hervey was given the title of 1st Baron Hervey. This meant he became a nobleman, or "peer," and could sit in the House of Lords, which is part of the British Parliament. His title was linked to his home, Ickworth, in Suffolk.

Later, in October 1714, he received an even higher title: 1st Earl of Bristol. He earned these titles because he strongly supported important events in English history. These included the Glorious Revolution, which changed how England was ruled, and the Hanoverian succession, which brought a new royal family to the throne.

Family Homes and Estates

John Hervey's main family home was Ickworth. His family had owned this estate for a long time, since his ancestor Thomas Hervey gained it in 1467.

When John Hervey married Elizabeth Felton, he also gained more land in Suffolk. These properties included Tuddenham, Playford, and Shotley. He received these lands after Elizabeth's father, Sir Thomas Felton, passed away in 1709.

His Marriages and Many Children

Lord Bristol was married two times.

His First Family

His first wife was Isabella, who passed away in 1693. She was the daughter of Sir Robert Carr. They had three children together:

  • Isabella Hervey (died 1711), who did not marry.
  • Carr Hervey, Lord Hervey (1691–1723). He also studied at Clare College, Cambridge. Like his father and grandfather, he became an MP for Bury St Edmunds from 1713 to 1722. He passed away without marrying.
  • Catherine Hervey (born 1693), who died when she was young.

His Second Family

On July 25, 1695, he married his second wife, Elizabeth. They were married at Boxted Hall in Suffolk. Elizabeth was the daughter of Sir Thomas Felton and Lady Elizabeth Howard. She passed away in 1741.

John and Elizabeth had a very large family with seventeen children! Here are some of them:

  • Lady Elizabeth Hervey (1698–1727). She married Bussy Mansel.
  • John Hervey, 2nd Baron Hervey (1696–1743). He was a well-known politician and writer. When his older half-brother Carr passed away, John took the title of Lord Hervey. He was called to the House of Lords in 1733. He also passed away before his father.
  • Thomas Hervey (1699–1775). He was an MP for Bury St Edmunds from 1733 to 1747. He held several jobs at the royal court. He wrote many pamphlets.
