Announcing His Campaign
On September 2, 2003, John Kerry officially announced he was running for president. He wanted to win the Democratic Party's nomination. This meant he had to compete against other Democrats first.
Winning the Primary Elections
To become the main candidate, John Kerry had to win many smaller elections. These are called primary elections. He competed against other well-known politicians. Some of these included John Edwards, Howard Dean, and Wesley Clark.
After winning these important primary elections, John Kerry became the official Democratic nominee. This meant he would represent the Democratic Party in the main election.
The Main Presidential Election
In the 2004 presidential election, John Kerry faced George W. Bush. Bush was the Republican president already in office. A president who is already in office is called an incumbent.
The election was held on November 3, 2004. John Kerry did not win this election. President George W. Bush was re-elected for another term.
