John Koukouzelis (Greek: Ιωάννης Κουκουζέλης, Ioannis Koukouzelis; fl. c. 1300–50) (Albanian: Jan Kukuzeli) was a very important Byzantine composer and singer. He made big changes to Byzantine chant, which is a special kind of religious singing. After he died, the Eastern Orthodox Church recognized him as a saint. People from Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia, Romania, and Serbia still admire his music today. He was one of the most famous musicians during the Palaiologos family's rule.

Who Was John Koukouzelis?
Early Life and Education
John Koukouzelis was born in a city called Dyrrhachium, which is now Durrës in Albania. This was in the late 1200s. His mother was Bulgarian, and his father's background is not known. Sadly, he became an orphan when he was a child, meaning both his parents died.
His last name, Koukouzelis, might come from two different words. One idea is that it comes from the Greek word for "broad beans" (koukia). Another idea is that it comes from the Albanian word for "red" (Kuqe) and a Slavic word for "cabbage" (zele).
When he was very young, people noticed how talented he was. He was accepted into a special school at the emperor's palace in Constantinople. There, he got his education and became one of the top experts in music of his time.
Life as a Monk
John Koukouzelis was a favorite of the Byzantine emperor and a main singer in the choir. But he decided to leave the palace life. He moved to Mount Athos, a famous place for monks, and lived a simple life in the Great Lavra monastery. Because his singing was so beautiful, people called him "Angel-voiced."
Koukouzelis's Musical Innovations
A New Style of Singing
John Koukouzelis created a new, beautiful style of singing called "kalophonic." This style came from an older type of chant called "sticherarion." Many years after his time, another musician named Manuel Chrysaphes said that Koukouzelis invented these new ways of singing. These new styles were called "sticheron kalophonikon" and "anagrammatismos." They changed how religious music was performed.
His Legacy and Sainthood
A Lasting Impact
John Koukouzelis is seen as the most important person in music during his time. His ideas and compositions greatly influenced Byzantine music. He was later recognized as a saint by the Eastern Orthodox Church. His special day, called a feast day, is celebrated every year on October 1.
Honoring His Name
Many places and institutions are named after him. In his hometown of Durrës, Albania, there is a music school called Shkolla Jon Kukuzeli. Also, a place in Antarctica called Kukuzel Cove, located on Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands, is named after him. This shows how widely he is remembered and honored.
