John Logan Cashin Jr. (born April 16, 1928 – died March 21, 2011) was an American dentist and a strong supporter of civil rights. He was also a politician who worked to make things fairer for everyone. He started and led a group called the National Democratic Party of Alabama.

Early Life and Education

John Logan Cashin Jr. was born in Huntsville, Alabama. He came from a family that valued education and public service. His father was a dentist, just like he would become. His mother was a school principal, helping many students learn and grow.

John Cashin Jr. went to Tennessee State University for his first degree. After that, he studied dentistry at Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry. He earned a special degree called a Doctor of Dental Surgery. This meant he was ready to become a dentist.

His family had a history of helping their community. His grandfather, Herschel Cashin, was even part of the Alabama government in the 1870s. After finishing his studies, John Cashin Jr. served in the Army Dental Corps from 1955 to 1957. He used his dental skills to help soldiers.

Fighting for Change

John Cashin Jr. was a very important person in the fight for civil rights. He wanted all people, especially African Americans, to have equal rights and opportunities. He believed in fairness and worked hard to achieve it.

He founded the National Democratic Party of Alabama (NDPA). This party worked to give African Americans a stronger voice in politics. It helped people register to vote and supported candidates who would represent their communities.

Running for Governor

In 1970, John Cashin Jr. ran for governor of Alabama. He was the candidate for the NDPA. He ran against George Wallace, who was a very well-known politician at the time. Even though he did not win, running for governor was a big step. It showed that the NDPA was serious about making changes. It also brought attention to the need for equal rights in Alabama.

Greene County Victory

The NDPA had a big success in Greene County, Alabama. On January 18, 1971, the party celebrated a huge victory there. Their candidates won many important local elections. For example, William McKinley Branch won against Judge Herndon. Thomas Gilmore also won, defeating Sheriff Bill Lee. These wins were very important. They showed that the NDPA could help people get elected and make a real difference in their local communities. John Cashin Jr., as the leader, spoke at this celebration. He was proud of what the party had achieved.

Later Life and Family

John Logan Cashin Jr. passed away on March 21, 2011. He died in a hospital in Washington, D.C., after becoming sick with pneumonia.

His daughter, Sheryll Cashin, followed in his footsteps of public service and education. She is now a professor at Georgetown University Law Center. John Cashin Jr. also had two sons, John and Carroll. His legacy of fighting for civil rights and equality continues through his family and the work he did.
