Sheryll D. Cashin, born on December 15, 1961, is a law professor at Georgetown University Law Center. She grew up in Huntsville, Alabama. Her parents were very involved in politics and worked for civil rights. Their work taught her how important it is to be involved in your community. These ideas still guide her studies and discussions today.

Family and Early Life

Being involved in politics and working for change was a big part of Sheryll Cashin's family life. This led her to focus on issues like segregation and inequality. In 1962, when Sheryll was just four months old, her mother, Joan, was arrested. This happened during a sit-in protest at a lunch counter.

Her father, John L. Cashin, Jr., was a dentist. He was also an important civil rights leader in Huntsville, Alabama, in the late 1960s. He even ran against George Wallace in the 1970 election for governor of Alabama. He started a political party led by Black people called the National Democratic Party of Alabama (NDPA). This party helped thousands of voters who were stopped from voting by Jim Crow laws.

Sheryll Cashin's great-grandfather, Herschel V. Cashin, was also involved in politics. He was a Republican lawmaker in Alabama after the Civil War. He was born in Georgia and was the child of an Irish father and a free woman of mixed race. In 1966, Sheryll's family became the first Black family to move to Owens Drive in Huntsville. This was a big step for their neighborhood.

Education and Studies

Sheryll Cashin worked very hard in school. In 1984, she graduated with top honors from Vanderbilt University. She earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.

She then went to St Catherine's College, Oxford in England. There, she earned a master's degree in English Law in 1986. She was a Marshall Scholar, which is a special scholarship for talented students. Later, in 1989, she earned her law degree with honors from Harvard Law School.

Career and Teaching

Sheryll Cashin has had an impressive career. She worked in the White House when Bill Clinton was president. She advised him on issues about cities and the economy. Her focus was on helping communities grow in inner city areas.

She also worked for important judges. She was a law clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. She also worked for Judge Abner Mikva of the U.S. Court of Appeals. After these jobs, she worked as a lawyer in other roles.

Today, Sheryll Cashin is a law professor at Georgetown University. She teaches many subjects, including Constitutional Law and Property Law. She also teaches about race and American law. She writes a lot about race relations, government, and inequality in America. She also studies how housing is separated by race.

Books and Writings

Sheryll Cashin has written several books. One of her books is called The Failures of Integration: How Race and Class are Undermining the American Dream. In this book, she talks about how separating people by race and class hurts American democracy. She looked at information about schools and neighborhoods. She found that racial separation still exists in schools and communities. She believes we need to change the idea that separation is okay to solve inequality in America.

Another book she wrote is The Agitator's Daughter: A Memoir of Four Generations of One Extraordinary African-American Family. This book tells the story of U.S. race relations from slavery to after the Civil Rights Movement.

Cashin has also written chapters for other books and many articles for journals. She often appears on radio and TV shows to share her ideas. She has been on NPR All Things Considered, The Diane Rehm Show, and CNN.
