John Michael Murphy (August 3, 1926 – May 25, 2015) was an American politician. He was a member of the Democratic Party. Murphy served as a U.S. Representative for New York in the U.S. House of Representatives. He represented New York's 16th and 17th districts.

He attended La Salle Military Academy when he was younger. Later, he studied at Amherst College. He also went to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Serving His Country: Military Life
John Murphy served in the U.S. Army. He joined in August 1944. He served as an enlisted soldier first. After four years at West Point, he became an officer.
He received special awards for his service. These included the Distinguished Service Cross. He also earned the Bronze Star. He left the Army in July 1956 as a captain.

John Murphy was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He was a Democrat. He served from January 3, 1963, to January 3, 1981. This means he was a Representative for 18 years.
