John McCarthy's Football Journey
Starting with Collingwood
John McCarthy was chosen by Collingwood in the 2007 National Draft. He was the 31st player picked. John was a midfielder, which means he played in the middle of the field.
He started playing for Collingwood late in the 2008 AFL season. He played in the last six games that year. This included two important final games.
In 2009 and 2010, John found it hard to keep his spot on the Collingwood team. He only played two games in each of these seasons. This was because of injuries and not always playing his best. However, he often returned to the main team at the end of the year. In 2009, he played in a qualifying final. In 2010, he was named as an emergency player for the 2010 AFL Grand Final.
He played eight games in 2011. But he was not chosen to play during the final games that year. After the 2011 season, Collingwood decided he would no longer play for their team.
Moving to Port Adelaide
After leaving Collingwood, John trained with the Richmond team. But then, Port Adelaide chose him in the 2012 pre-season draft. They picked him just before Richmond could.
John quickly became a key player for Port Adelaide in the 2012 season. He only missed one game that entire year.
John McCarthy's Education
John McCarthy went to The Peninsula School. This school is located in Mount Eliza, Victoria. He finished school there in 2007.

Remembering John McCarthy
John McCarthy passed away on September 9, 2012. This happened while he was on a holiday with other Port Adelaide players. They were in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the U.S..
Police looked into what happened. They said John tried to jump from a rooftop onto a palm tree. But he slipped and fell to the ground.
In 2013, a special banner was made to remember John. Both Collingwood and Port Adelaide teams ran through this single banner. It was a way to honor John, who had played for both clubs.
After John's passing, Port Adelaide decided to retire his number 35 guernsey (jersey). This means no other player will wear that number for the team.
