Who is John M. Younge?

Early Life and Education

John M. Younge grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went to Boston University and earned a science degree in 1977. Later, he studied law at Howard University School of Law, getting his law degree in 1981. He also earned a special degree in judicial studies from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2011.

A Career in Law

After finishing law school, Younge started his own law practice in Philadelphia. He worked there from 1982 to 1985. Then, he joined the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority. This organization helps improve areas in the city. He worked there for ten years, eventually becoming their main lawyer.

Becoming a Judge

In 1996, John Younge became a judge for the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas. This is a local court where judges handle many different types of cases. He worked as a judge there for many years, until 2019. During his time as a judge, he heard both criminal and civil cases. He also served on a committee for the Democratic Party in Philadelphia.

His Path to Federal Judge

First Nomination: President Obama

Becoming a federal judge is a big step. It requires a nomination from the President and approval from the Senate. On July 30, 2015, President Barack Obama nominated John Younge to become a federal judge. He was nominated for a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. This seat became open when Judge Mary A. McLaughlin retired. Younge had a hearing with a Senate committee in December 2015. However, his nomination did not get approved before the end of that Congress.

Second Nomination: President Trump

Even though his first nomination expired, John Younge was nominated again. On July 13, 2018, President Donald Trump announced he would nominate Younge for the same federal judge position. This was part of a plan to nominate judges from both major political parties. His nomination was sent to the Senate a few days later.

The Senate process can take time. His nomination was sent back to the President in January 2019. However, President Trump quickly nominated him again later that month. In February 2019, a Senate committee voted to approve his nomination. Finally, on July 31, 2019, the full Senate approved his nomination. He officially became a federal judge on August 20, 2019.
