Later, he taught English literature in Canada at the University of Manitoba. After that, he moved to England and worked as a gardener at a monastery in Oxford. He spent his later years living near Mangerton Mountain in County Kerry. A film called Dreamtime, Revisited was made in 2012, inspired by his writings.
